Nestlé & all partners launch “United for Healthier Kids” to raise healthier generation.

Nestlé Thailand in partnership with the Office of Basic Education Commission, Ministry of Education; the Department of Education, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration; Chulalongkorn University; Institution of Nutrition, Mahidol University and Rakluke Group Co., Ltd. (RLG Group) have joined forces to launch the United for Healthier Kids (U4HK) program, inviting everyone in the society to join this social movement and contribute towards helping parents and caregivers raise  healthier generation of children in Thailand.

The program aims to help parents and caregivers establish healthier eating, drinking and lifestyle habits among children aged 3-12 years old through “HERO MEAL” game-changing education, tools and inspiring ideas, powered by nutritional and behavioral science, to encourage the adoption of sustainable healthier habits.

During the 1st year post-launch, the program direction will be set by an external group of knowledgeable and renowned experts in the fields of behavioural and nutritional science:

  • Professor Emeritus Kraisid Tontisirin, M.D., Ph.D., A Senior Advisor of the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University and a member of the Thai National Food Committee.
  • Dr. Pongsak Noipayak (M.D.), a pediatrician at Vajira Hospital
  • Ms. Chanisa Tantixalerm (PhD), an expert in child learning and behaviour development from Chulalongkorn University
  • Ms. Chatrapa Hudthagosol, a dietitian at Department of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University
  • Mr. Willment Leong, Chairman of the World Association of Chef Society
  • Ms. Duangporn Songwissawa, a leading chef at Bolan Restaurant
  • Mr. Apinun Sawetwannakun, an experienced chef

Professor Emeritus Kraisid Tontisirin, M.D., Ph.D., A Senior Advisor of the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University and a member of the Thai National Food Committee, said, “Thai Children’s health is at risk. According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Public Health, about 7-10% of Thai children are underweight while another 12%are overweight and obese. Although there are many initiatives aimed at addressing this, such as School Milk and School Lunch programs, the issue remains and, perhaps, it is getting worse.

Thailand is now becoming one of the countries with the most rapid rise of obesity rate. The root cause of this issue is unhealthy habits. Children often eat high-calorie but low nutrient foods and too few vegetables; drink too little water and do less than 45-60 minutes of physical activity a day.”

“Tackling growing childhood overweight and obesity rates must be a priority for all parties concerned with public health in Thailand and of true importance on the national agenda. To tackle it, we need collaboration from all parties - private and public sectors, parents at home and caregivers in communities. We have to unite to influence and encourage children to develop healthy behaviors from young and start to eat nutritious foods in the right proportion, drink more water and less sweetened drinks, and do more physical activity,” said Prof. Kraisid.

Mrs. Audrey Liow, Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of Nestlé Indochina said,

“What is happening in Thailand is similar to what many other countries are facing today and world experts are looking for ways to tackle this. It is part of our responsibility to get involved and take action now. It is important for children to start developing desirable healthy  behaviours as early as possible to ensure positive life-long habits.  For the 1st year of launch, our program will target children aged 3-5 years old.”

Mrs. Kanokthip Prinyarnussorn, Corporate Communication and Nutrition, Health and Wellness Group Manager of Nestlé Thailand, revealed, “Nestlé Thailand, together with experts and partners, have identified 3 healthier habits that need to be brought into everyday routines of children to ensure a healthier lifestyle.    1) CHOOSE NUTRITIOUS & VARIED OPTIONS with more fruits and vegetables 2) CHOOSE TO DRINK WATER for healthy hydration 3) MOVE MORE, SIT LESS for both physical and mental development

Mrs. Kanokthip added, “We have introduced a set of creative, fun and engaging tools called the “Hero Meal” solution, which includes Hero Plate, Hero Cup, Hero Menu, Hero Booklet with Stickers and Hero Content, to help parents and caregivers create a positive environment that encourages children to adopt and sustain a healthier lifestyle with small, sustained efforts. The Hero Plate & Cup will create an exciting experience for children to enjoy the meal and, at the same time remind parents/teachers to provide varied and nutritious meal to children.

The Hero Menu is co-created with the leading chefs in Thailand to provide easy, nutritious yet economical recipes that children love.  The Hero Booklet with Stickers serve as a reward for children as well as a habit monitoring tool for parents and caregivers. Lastly, the Hero Content is co-developed with child development experts to inspire and educate parents with fun, science-based and creative techniques to nurture healthy lifestyle in children. The content covers three key pillars – creative menu, child behavioural development and nutrition.”

“For the 1st year of launch, we focus on community activations in 4 pilot schools, namely Attawit School, Somapanussorn School, Wat Nang School, and Wat Pathumwanaram School to implement the Hero Meal solution. We will pilot usage of the tools with 800 kindergarten students aged 3-5 years old in these 4 schools for a period of 3 months. The program will be monitored and evaluated by two leading universities (Chulalongkorn and Mahidol) to identify key success factors and improvement areas in this pilot project. The outcome and recommendations will steer U4HK program expansion in the following years.” Mrs. Kanokthip concluded.
