Arabica Experimental & Demonstration Farm at Doi Tung
Arabica and Robusta are the two main coffee varieties grown in Thailand. In 1988 a Nestlé joint venture company, Quality Coffee Products Ltd. (QCP), which is NESCAFÉ manufacturer, established the Arabica Experimental & Demonstration Farm at Doi Tung, Chiang Rai Province in order to introduce coffee as an alternative crop for hill-tribe farmers as part of H.R.H. the late Princess Mother’s Doi Tung development project. Arabica coffee is developed at the farm, where a total of 57 varieties from Mexico, Columbia, Costa Rica, Portugal, Hawaii and the High Land Coffee Research & Development Centre, some 22,000 seedlings, had been planted to determine the most suitable varieties for cultivation in northern Thailand. Six healthiest and promising cultivars of Arabica coffee are selected and disseminated to hill-tribe farmers.
